Emergency Radios and Communications

A useful emergency radio receives broadcasts available where you live and works when your normal electricity or internet does not. Choose reception and power reliability before extra features.

Commercial transparency: Merchant links on this page are ordinary, untracked links. No affiliate commission path has been verified for them. Products are examples of a category, not hands-on test winners or government endorsements.

Battery FM radio: A simple option where local official information uses FM. Test reception indoors, tuning controls and battery life.

DAB-capable radio: Consider where your country’s guidance uses DAB. FM-only and US weather-band models are not interchangeable with DAB.

US weather-alert radio: For compatible NOAA Weather Radio coverage. Check the location, alert functions and power backup. Do not assume US alerts operate abroad.

Two-way radio: Lets compatible users talk within practical range; it does not replace a broadcast receiver. Licensing, permitted bands and equipment rules vary by country. Buildings, terrain and antennas affect range.

Power and accessibility checks

Test actual reception at home. Check replaceable batteries or USB charging, manual tuning, volume, readable controls and any accessibility needs. Small solar panels and hand cranks are backup features, not a guaranteed full recharge or phone-charging solution.

A researched US example

Midland ER310 official product page describes a portable weather radio with rechargeable, solar and crank power options. The page displayed $89.99 when checked November 5, 2026; verify current price, coverage and availability. Manufacturer runtime claims are not independent test results. This is a US-market example, not a UK default.

Build a communications plan

Write station frequencies and important numbers on paper. Arrange a household meeting point and a check-in contact. Keep phones charged, but do not make mobile data the only way to obtain information.

Next action

Find the broadcast method in your country’s guidance, then test a radio you already own before shopping.
