Choose backup power by the devices you need to run and for how long. A larger battery is useful only when it solves a measured household problem.

Choose the right category
USB power bank: For compatible phones and small devices. Check USB voltage, charging protocol and usable energy. It cannot directly run ordinary mains appliances.
Portable power station: For compatible USB, DC and mains loads within its ratings. More expensive and heavier; capacity alone does not establish suitability.
Power station plus solar: Adds a possible recharge source. Panel ratings are test-condition figures; cloud, shade, orientation and season affect output. Plan for days with insufficient solar input.
Capacity and wattage answer different questions
Watt-hours (Wh) describe stored energy. Watts describe the load or output rate. A 1,000 Wh battery does not necessarily run a 1,000 W appliance, and it will not deliver its full nameplate capacity at every outlet.
Planning example, not a product test: 1,000 Wh × an assumed 80% usable fraction ÷ a steady 50 W load = 16 hours. The 80% is an illustrative assumption. Actual runtime depends on inverter losses, standby use, temperature, battery condition and appliance cycling. Measure the device and test the setup.
Before choosing a model
Check continuous output, startup surge, usable capacity, socket voltage, charging time, solar voltage/current limits, connectors, weight, warranty and local support. A fast transfer mode is not proof of suitability for life-critical equipment. Use device-specific backup arrangements.
A researched UK example
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2: manufacturer specifications and current price is an example from our existing research. Compare it against your measured need, rather than treating it as a universal recommendation. EcoFlow UK and BLUETTI EU provide alternative catalogs; check country, stock, plug type and delivery before ordering. We have not verified checkout stock or a current price comparison.
Safe setup
Follow ventilation, operating-temperature, charging and storage instructions. Keep equipment dry as specified. Do not connect a power station to household wiring through an improvised cable. Fixed electrical integration requires an appropriate professional installation.
Next action
Write each device’s measured watts, startup needs and required hours. Then compare the manuals against that list. Complete your household gap checklist.
